Just a few comments about the Chevrolet S-10 Truck V-8 Conversion Manual by JTR that I purchased for the conversion.

Headers work fine. JTR doesn't recommend headers because they claim they are too much work. I found them to be fairly easy to install. I know I did much less modifying than they did with stock manifolds. I had to adjust the passenger firewall some and cut off one of the ears on the transmission. They claim both ears need to be removed and the firewall needed much more modifying. I disagree, in some of their manifold installations they had to modify the firewall on both sides, move the steering column, cut of some metal off one of the A-arms and modify the crossmember on both sides. The only reason I had to modify the crossmember was to make clearance for the starter.

Turbo 350 transmissions aren't that bad. Although 700R4 transmissions are nice, don't completely rule out Turbo 350's. 700R4's aren't cheap, while TH350's are (I paid $75 for my TH350). Yes, you do run higher RPM's and freeways should be avoided but if you can live with that (and saving $700-$1500) then go for it. Now that my TH350 doesn't work too well any more I am saving my money for a 700 to try to improve gas milage and be able to drive the truck longer distances at freeway speeds.

Power brake boosters: If you have a 2.8 S-10 you don't need to upgrade the brake booster. If the stock booster worked fine before then it will work fine after. Of course if you have a huge cam you may want to consider a hydraboost. It's not like you are adding 2 tons of weight to your truck. I didn't notice any weight difference, the truck sits at the same height and stops the same.

Electric Cooling Fans: JTR claims that running only electric cooling fans will not work. I beg to differ. JTR says that "REAL" trucks don't use only electric cooling fans. So? JTR says that trucks with electric fans will over heat in the mildest of weather. I've used my truck in approximately 95° weather pulling a fiberglass (heavy) 17 1/2' boat with no overheating problems (the boat is bigger than my truck!). I have yet to overheat my 350 and I'm only using a single row radiator.

I'm not saying the conversion book is a bunch of B.S. but I just wanted to point out a few things that I didn't quite agree with. Overall I thought the book was quite informative and came in handy from time to time.
